Wardening Team

Dr Nick Voulvoulis is a Reader in the Centre for Environmental Policy and the Director of the MSc in Environmental Technology at Imperial. He has been the Warden for the last 8 years and has been at Imperial for the last 15 years. The Warden plays the key role in orchestrating the smooth running of Southwell. He also acts as the ultimate authority in hall with regards to all hall matters including disciplinary procedures.

Dr Cleo Kontoravdi is a Lecturer at the department of Chemical Engineering and has been the Assistant Warden since April 2008. She first came to Imperial in 1998 and did both her undergraduate and postgraduate studies here. Her research is in the field of biotechnology and in her spare time she enjoys traveling and cooking. The assistant warden acts in a supporting role to the warden, helping with the day-to-day management and administration of the hall.

A graduate from University of Sheffield, Nick is here to do a PhD in MRI Guided Endoscopy, having previously worked for BAE systems for 3 years. Born in Cornwall, he is part American and has lived in and travelled to many places, including Arizona (above) and York. In his spare time he enjoys playing the guitar, with his favourite TV shows being Boston Legal and House M.D.

Michael is a PhD student in the Department of Materials developing methods of detecting small particles going through small holes. His background is in mechanical engineering so hopefully he’ll be able to use that to build new and exciting things that we all can enjoy at Southwell and Bernard Sunley. He’s lived his entire life in the northeast of the US. He came to Imperial because he wanted to gain an international perspective on education and lifestyle as a whole. Likewise, he wanted to be a subwarden because he enjoys meeting new people. Enjoy your time at Southwell and Bernard Sunley and please don’t be a stranger and come say hello to Michael. Oh, and if you ever want something added to the magazine let him know because he’s in charge of that too.

Sam is a sub-warden, but also works in the Physics department doing research. Sam has been around in his research career and travelled to places such as California, Florida, Rome, Greece, France, Germany, Ireland as well as all around the U.K.! The great thing about being a sub-warden is meeting a diverse range of people from all sorts of places. Feel free to come and chat about my travel adventures!

Charles is working on a PhD in the Mechanical Engineering department. He also did his undergraduate at Imperial, before working at Arup for a couple of years. As well as the UK, he’s lived in France, Italy, and Spain and looks forward to meeting all of you! He’s also the deputy editor for the college’s student newspaper, Felix, so if you want to dabble in journalism or find out more about the clubs and societies available to you at Imperial give him a shout!

Dave (or Big Dave as he is inevitably known) is a PhD student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Having originally started at Imperial 2002, he's tried a succession of other things, spent a few years in industry and landed back as a PhD student investigating emissions from vehicles. Dave is a fan of beer, cricket and the great outdoors - feel free to pop by and say hello, he's probably just playing solitaire.

Red is a PhD student in the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology. She was a fresher at Southwell back in 2007 and decided she liked it so much as an undergraduate she came back as a post graduate! As well as a good appreciation for everything cultural that London has to offer (such as theatre, art, independent cinema and live music) she also has a healthy appreciation of other aspects of London culture including drinking at bars and pubs and dancing in clubs! If you are also interested in any of the above (even the infectious disease epidemiology bit) feel free to go find her and discuss it over a cup of tea (or something stronger she may have stashed away!).

Elpida, is one of the subwardens, and she is a PhD student in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering department. She is originally from Greece but she loves living in London because there are so many things to do and see! In her spare time, she enjoys travelling, cooking and listening to music. She is always up for a chat over a cup of coffee so feel free to drop by her room any time and say hello!

Hall Seniors

Hall Seniors are Imperial undergraduate students who loved halls so much they decided to come back for another year. They organise events, answer questions and ensure that settling in and having fun in your first year is as easy as possible.

Hi I’m Kirstie, a 2nd year chemical engineer and I’ll be living on the 3rd floor of Bernard Sunley (half of the dark blue group) this year, I also lived in Bernard Sunley. I love cooking and travelling, having recently been to Ireland and Singapore. I particularly enjoy theatre and can recommend a plethora of current West End shows. Rather fittingly for Imperial, one of my favourite TV shows is The Big Bang Theory. Please feel free to knock on my door, especially if I’ve been baking, for some tea and a chat or if you feel up to a challenge, a game of pool!

Hi, welcome to Southwell and Bernard Sunley Hall! This is the first year where Southwell and Burnard Sunley merge into one, the bigger crowd will definitely bring in more fun! I am Joy Wong, a third year Mathematics student. I have been in Southwell for the last 2 years, so should be quite familiar with living in halls and the area. I was born in Canada and grew up in Hong Kong, two very different places but I like them all. I love travelling and meeting people from different countries. Looking forward to meeting all of you, feel free to come knock on my door if you want a chat! x

Hi! I’m Tim, a second year Computing student and come from Chantilly, France. I really enjoyed Southwell last year, so I decided to come back! Hobbies include mountain biking, cooking, computer programming and eating jelly, among other things. I am more of a countryside person, so I love the outdoors and enjoy picking mushrooms and spotting wildlife. I also find anything computer-related interesting, from piles of wires to walls of code…
If you have a problem, knock on my door, I will do his best to help!

I’m Rahul, I'm a 3rd Year Medic and my role is to make sure you all have as much fun as possible! I think you'll only really start to appreciate how amazing London is when you are living right in the heart of the city… There’s so much to do and see and if you want any suggestions (or just want to chat) then please come and find me! My advice for everyone is to try your best to get involved with as much as you can in uni – the more you put in, the more you’ll get out of your time here!

Hi, I’m Alavari (AJ to my friends) and I’m a 3rd Year Biomedical Scientist. I’m a big fan of Uni life – the work, the fun, the relaxing and the craziness. Going to gigs, socials, clubbing, following F1 and playing snooker take up most of my spare time, and occasionally my study time too! I’m on the committee of both DebateSoc and FilmSoc, as much as I love my music I also love my films, and I don’t shy away from the weird and zainy ones. All this has meant my Imperial experience so far has been great fun and I’d like to be a part of that again and make sure you guys enjoy your time here as much as possible.

Welcome to Southwell & Bernard Sunely! I'm Julia, a 2nd Year Biomedical Engineering student from Shanghai, China. I play football and volleyball, but I love all kinds of sports! I've only lived in London for a year, but I absolutely love it here! If there's anything you need, or any questions, or if you just want to hang out and have fun, feel free to drop by House 55 second floor kitchen!!

Hello, I am Shelley, a forth year computing student. I am from Taiwan and this will be my ninth year living in the UK. I am a member of the Dramsoc Crew as well as a member of the St Johm Ambulance (LINKS). In my spare time (when I have them), I like to watch 'Friends' or playing with anything technical or just stare into space. Most of the time, I can be found either in my room, in Dramsoc Storeroom or in Huxley lab (219) trying to solve lab work etc. Hope you all enjoy your year in Southwell and do not be hesitate to contact us if any issue rises :)

Hey, I’m Brendon. I’m a 2nd year Maths student who was also in Southwell last year. I have a wide range of interests; my biggest probably being music, particularly indie folk, indie and electronic. I also enjoy pubbing and clubbing, cinema, etc and am generally always up for going out. I’m looking forward to meeting everybody moving in in October. I live right next to the 1st floor green kitchen in Southwell: feel free to say ‘Hello’.

Hello, I'm Matthew Parker, and I'm a 2nd year Geophysicist and hall senior for the BS ground floor kitchen (where I can usually be found developing either some kind of cuisine-warfare and/or edible food). I have an eclectic range of interests including, but not limited to, cinema, climbing, reading, drinking tea and attending RSM bar nights (which, as everyone knows, are the best at Imperial), and play a pretty good hand(s) at table-football. Nevertheless, I’m always up for trying new things and meeting new people, so if you have any problems (or even if you don’t) you can always drop round for a chat, preferably around a pot of tea and plate of biscuits.

Hi, Nathan here, wishing a happy welcome to Southwell and Bernard Sunley Hall. I’m a third year Materials student and this will be my third year in SBS hall. I’m the blue kitchen hall senior in House 51, so some of you may not see me as much as I’d like, so in order to make up for that fact I’ll be spending as much time as I can in the common rooms as possible, so if ever you want to talk, or need help with anything, that is probably where you’ll find me! Outside of hall life, I enjoy listening to music, reading, enjoying the outdoors and playing around with computers and this year I am the treasurer for the War Games society.

Hey everyone!! I am Mateusz, red kitchen hall senior (as well as the Football Team captain) for the upcoming academic year. I’ve spent a year here so I more or less know what’s going on..Southwell & Bernard Sunley Hall is an amazing place where you’re surely going to meet a lot of new people [and party a lot ;)] So don’t be nervous about anything – it’s going to be a great first year! If you have doubts about anything, just ask me! (but no, I will not cook, clean, iron, dress, wash etc. for you..)

Welcome to Imperial! My name is Mitali. I’m a third year Biochemistry student. I’m originally from India and have been living in England for eight years. In my spare time I enjoy playing hockey, cooking and exploring London. I have had a great time at Imperial so far and I hope you guys enjoy your time here too. I’m friendly and approachable so please drop by for a chat over a cup of tea whenever you like!

Sayinthen is a medical student and he is in his 3rd year of study here at Imperial. He is very involved with a number of clubs and societies at Imperial, from Interfaith to Surgical Society. His aim is to make every fresher both enjoy themselves and settle comfortably into university life.
In his spare time, Sayinthen likes to play badminton, kick-box and put a tune together on the piano. He is always ready to join in and help organise any activities that you would like to do, so please feel free to approach him. Having an interest in and a good overview of many cultural activities in London, he is always ready to offer advise on what to do if you have a spare evening and would like to go out.
He is always very happy to chat about any questions or problems you may encounter, and will try his very best to try and help you.

Hi. I’m Celeste van den Bosch and hall senior for the white group. I have a dual passion in life – Chemistry and Cricket. During term time chemistry is key so you’ll generally find me typing up the latest lab report but in my spare time I’m sure to be training with the Imperial cricket team. I’m half-Canadian, half-Dutch and since moving to the UK, I’ve also become a major Doctor Who fan. I’m starting my third year in Bernard Sunley and Southwell, so please feel free to come talk to me, even if it’s just to debate about who’s the best Doctor.

Hi. My name is Nastasia Bassil, I'm a second year mechanical engineer student, where the ratio girls/boys is 1:20. I'm a massive tennis fan, so if you want to hit some balls, or just watch some games, knock at my door! I believe I'm a great pasta, meat, boiled eggs cooker, but I welcome any new recipes so I can open up my "cooking repertoire". As I'm from Lebanon, I can speak French, Arabic (and English). I can also cook some really easy Lebanese food, so if you're looking to add some exotic touch to your dishes, give me a shout. I've had a unforgettable experience as a fresher living in halls, meeting people from all over the world...So if there is one advice I could tell you, it is to seize all the amazing opportunities you'll have at Imperial, they're a once in a life time tale!

Wardening Support

The wardening team are here to ensure that your Southwell and Bernard Sunley experience is comfortable, enjoyable, and memorable. The transition to an undergraduate student is not always straightforward and many students have problems, settling into a new city, making new friends and starting a new course.

Our team is here for two primary reasons:

1) coordinating social events
In order to help you make new friends, and get to know your fellow students, we coordinate and help you organise social activities. We normally have a couple of big events every term. For example, we have a Christmas party, and BBQs every Sunday during the summer term. Big events are supplemented by numerous smaller events which are spread throughout the term. These include trips to the theatre, ice-skating, and meals out.

2) providing support when needed
Things do not always go perfect when you are living in halls. A number of problems can come up including issues with your course, financial difficulties and relationship problems. The wardening team are here to help you overcome such difficulties and advise as necessary. If we cannot help you, we will refer you to someone who can.
Students in Southwell and Bernard Sunley Hall are split into eight colour groups: Red, Green, Yellow, Blue, White, Dark Blue, Purple, and Grey, and two smaller groups within those colours, associated with the kitchens they use.
Each colour group has a different member of the wardening team responsible for their well-being, and a different Senior per kitchen group as a first point of contact.

There are a number of ways you can contact your warden if you have a problem that you would like to talk about. We all live in the Hall, so you can knock on our door. You can also send us an email to arrange a face-to-face meeting. If your problem is urgent, you can call the Hall's emergency number on 40903 (7pm to 8am on weekdays and 24h/day during the weekend).
