| Can I see photos of my room? | Well not quite, but you can see videos of both Garden and Weeks halls here |
| About swipe cards. | When you arrive at College you will get a swipe card that will get you into halls, the gym, your department, the library, etc. You may not lend this to anyone else - it's got your photo on it, and it belongs to you alone. If you lose it you can get a new one from the Security lodge in the Sherfield building (middle of campus. The first time you lose your card replacement is free! But everytime after that it costs £10! |
| What if I get locked out of my room? | If you have a room-mate, contact them first! Otherwise go to security. But be warned, if you call them more than once this year, they will start to issue fines. |
| What is in my room? | A typical room will include the followings: a bed, study desk, chair, wardrobe, shelving, desk lamp, bedside light, phone, laundry basket, and curtains. Of course if you are in a shared room there will be more than this! Many of our rooms are beautifully decorated, and you may be lucky to get a historically listed room! |
| About smoking! | The college no-smoking policy is in effect in hall and smoking is only allowed at a minimum of five meters away from the hall in Princes Gardens. |
| What if I have a bicycle? | To reister your bike to make sure that your bike is safe, you can apply to keep it in one of our safe "lock-down" sheds. Just click on the link to download
your own application form. Then just return it to the Hall Supervisor.

| How do I connect to the internet? | You need to just plug in and open a browser, then register online. Also see Computer Help The internet connection in your room is part of the College network and so is very quick. It is more than sufficient for any work requirements you may have. Please do not use Bittorrent and similar programs. Even if you are downloading files legally, the enormous number of connections opened by Bittorrent software will overload the hall's network server and cause connection errors to other internet users in the hall. 100Mbps connection via Ethernet, 50Mbps connection via Wi-Fi. |
| What's my phone number? | Pick up your phone and it should be written there. If not, the list of phone numbers are written outside at the entrance of Garden Hall, House 11, check it there (to call from outside college, add 020 785 + your extension number)! You can now also find extension numbers in our phone directory . |
| About bathrooms and kitchens! | Every kitchen is equipped with cookers, ovens, mircowaves, kettle, toasters, refrigerators and freezers. You will have your own lockable cupboard, the keys to which will be provided. Electrical appliances from home are not permitted as they pose a fire risk. If you do use them they could be taken away from you - be prepared! |
| Do I need to bring an iron with me and are there washing facilities? | There are irons, and ironing boards in both Garden and Weeks, and moreover we have washers and dryers in the basement of both buildings.. You can buy washing tablets from here or from the shop across the road. |
| About cleaning. | Your rooms will be cleaned by the cleaning staff fortnightly. Kitchens and bathrooms are cleaned daily, from Monday to Friday. They won't clean your dishes though, and things left out will be put into a "green bin" in the kitchen and eventually disposed of if they are not claimed. |
| If am over 6ft tall can I get a larger bed? | Oh yes!! A little known secret is to email or call up residences - they can organise a larger bed for you! But shhh... |
| Help something is broken - who do I talk to to sort it out? | Just send a little note to the hall supervisor and they can help you out - defect form here. |
| Do I need a visa to go to the Bruges trip? If so, where and how much is my visa? | If you do not hold an EU passport then you might need to go to the Belgian Embassy on Eaton Road to obtain a visa. The short stay visa will allow you up to 30 days of multiple entry. However, if you have a passport from Hong Kong, Singapore or Malaysia then you will be fine for short trips. | Does the hall provide insurance cover for personal belongings? | Imperial College arranges basic insurance cover for students living in its halls of residence. Details will be provided in the welcome packs handed out on the first day. We should recommend that any students with particularly valuable items (computer equipment, bikes, etc) should make their own insurance arrangements. |
| What if I need medical assistance? | You can go to the medical centre which lies just opposite to Garden Hall (across the park), or alternatively you can call the duty mobile and we will come and help you. |
| Who do I call in case of an incident/disturbance or for friendly adivce in Halls? | There is a duty mobile you can call from 7pm till 7am: 57686. If you are calling from a mobile phone then dial 07740 918619. One of four people will be on duty from around 7pm onwards. See the the Team for who's who. |
| In case of an emergency, what do I do? | If you are unable to get the duty warden on 40901, please dial 4444. This is Imperial College emergency line who have a number of trained first aid personnel and fire officers. They also contact the Emergency services, if necessary and direct them to Hall. |
| What are the local bus routes? | From the bus stations around Imperial College you can catch buses 9, 10, 49, 70, 52 and 360. If you walk to the South Kensington station you can also catch buses 14, 74, 345, 414, 430 and C1. Night routes serving the area are N9, N10, N52, N74, N97, 14 and 345.
