The G&W Rules
As a resident of Garden & Weeks Hall (G&W) you are required to abide by certain rules. These are intended to maximise safety and security within Hall, and to minimise potential inconvenience caused to other residents and our neighbours. They are set out below. Largely they are common sense and providing you are sensible and responsible you will have no difficulty in complying with them.
- Observe all fire safety and evacuation procedures in operation.
- Do not compromise the safety of yourself or others (e.g. never prop open fire doors, tamper with fire safety equipment, throw or let fall objects from the building, enter prohibited areas of the building).
- Avoid making excessive noise (e.g. playing music systems or amplified instruments loudly, shouting etc.), especially between 23:00 and 07:00, when no noise should be audible outside your room. The back garden is also off limits during these times. Excessive noise is very disruptive for neighbours both within and outside Hall and is regarded as a serious disciplinary matter.
- Respect the rights and needs of your fellow residents and the neighbours.
- Do not cause wilful damage to Hall or College property - all accidental damage must be reported to the House Keeper on the ground floor using the defect forms available near the pigeonholes.
- Do not allow uninvited strangers to enter the Hall and do not leave open any external doors.
- Guests are permitted in Halls, subject to permission of the warden. The resident is fully responsible for the behaviour of their guests, and must accompany them at all times. Guests may be asked to leave by the wardening staff at any time. Permission to have guests staying overnight must be requested to the warden one week in advance.
- Illegal acts in Hall e.g. use or possession of illegal drugs will lead to referral to a College Residences Tribunal and to the Police. Possession of such drugs will lead to expulsion from the Hall.
- Bicycles are not permitted in the Hall; they should be kept outside. There is a bicycle rack underneath the Faculty (blue) building where you can lock up your bike.
- Rollerblading, ballgames, etc. are not permitted in Hall. You may not play ball games in the back garden or the secret garden.
- Smoking is not allowed anywhere in Hall (including gardens, balconies, outdoor basement areas and roofs).
Enforcing discipline within Halls is the responsibility of the Warden (João), Assistant Warden (Martyn) and Sub-wardens (Marco and Elly). All residents are governed by the terms of their license to occupy and the Imperial College disciplinary code. Penalties such as fines can be imposed within Hall for breaking any of the above rules and, in more serious cases; a Residences Disciplinary Tribunal can be called. Particularly serious cases can result in the loss of your place in Hall and expulsion from College.
Also note:
That you are responsible for your keys , and if you lose them you will be charged £25.00 to cover the cost of replacement.
If you have been given a temporary swipe card you must return it to Housekeeper as soon as you receive your permanent departmental card. Failure to do so will result in a £10.00 fine.
Also, remember to complete the inventory form (which should have been in your room when you first arrived), and return it to the Housekeeper after you have checked your room.
